Library Outreach

Beginning in 2008, Rupununi Learners has been collaborating with Rupununi communities to create Nursery and Primary classroom libraries similar to the ones that have proven effective in improving reading in Yupukari: surrounding children with enticing, quality picture books that support the development of the recreational reading habit.

Thanks to the dedication and generosity of Books Beyond Borders, we are able to provide US public library juvenile discards at a ratio of 7 different titles per student. We also provide the nails and the chainsaw fuel (the items that require a cash outlay) to make raingutter shelving for the books. Communities muster the labor and donate the trees.

To date we have worked with the villages of Kaicumbay, Katoka, Nappi, Parishara, Kwartamang, Quatata, and Arapaima Primary School in Lethem, and are in varying stages of early collaboration with four others as well as Bina Hill Institute.
