About the Rupununi The Rupununi Savannahs are found in the south central Guyana is one of the most beautiful areas in Guyana, and one of the richest in biodiversity. This is the largest administrative region of Guyana but is inhabited by only 20,000 people! This area is criss corssed by rivers of different sizes and majesty, surrounded by forest and is bisected by Kakaku Mountains. The Kanakus divide the savannahs into the north, which is inhabited by the Makushi Amerindians and the South, which is inhabited by the Wai Wai and the Wapishana Amerindians. Part of the reason for the richness in biodiversity in this region is because the area is a watershed for both Amazon and Essequibo catchments.
